I was 25 years old and I didn't feel good about myself. I had very little energy, no pep to do anything. And what annoyed me most were those moments in the morning. I got up, washed, had breakfast and then made my way to work. And then, right away, it all went downhill; I was less than 15 minutes on the road and I felt tired and lethargic, I didn't really want to start my day, actually, I just wanted to crawl back into bed.
Something drastically had to change; I couldn't go on like this. That was at the time when the book The Food Hourglass first appeared. I started reading this book and began to realize that the many quick sugars I ate at breakfast probably did me in. You should know that my breakfast consisted of a slice of bread with chocolate or biscuit spread...
I had nothing to lose, so I went for a drastic approach... From one day to the next, I quit eating fast sugars, not at breakfast, not as a snack, nothing.
I must honestly admit that, at first, I was shocked by my body’s reaction: I had a headache on and off for the first 10 days. I would have never thought that my body was so dependent on those sugars in the morning. But after 10 days, I experienced a feeling that is hard to describe, I felt reborn. At 5 o'clock in the morning I was already awake in bed with lots of energy! I was able to do tons of work; I had never experienced this before!
I vowed I would never be so dependent on sugar again, I wouldn't allow it. I felt so alive, was in touch with my own body like never before.
Finding a breakfast that does not contain fast sugars was not that obvious. In the supermarket I didn't find anything that met my expectations, or rather my demands. The only option was to start making my own breakfast cereals. I discovered a nice book about muesli breakfasts, and it had a recipe for granola. Crispy baked pure grains, nuts, pits and seeds!! It was so delicious!! Together with some yogurt and fresh fruit, my ideal breakfast to get through the morning with tons of energy!!
Of course I couldn't just keep it at that! I simply had to convince my friends and family as well, I couldn't just let this pass, so much energy. I wanted everyone to experience this.
I convinced them to change their lifestyle as well, suggested that they could have some of my granola for their breakfast in the morning, so they wouldn't have to spend time making it themselves!
And as it turned out, I was not the only one who experienced the changes! With a healthy breakfast they had enough energy until noon! So then the ball really started rolling, that one breakfast cereal taster was just the beginning :-) Before I knew it, I was cooking granola for my friends and family a whole day a week!
